前最ShaoyangCustomsofficialsinspectlightersonMay22madebyHunanDongyiElectricShareCo.[PhotoprovidedtoCHINADAILY]EditorsNote:InaseriesofreportstitledClaimstoFame,ChinaDailylooksathowsomeregionshaveearnedwealthandrecognitionthroughspecificproductstorealizethegoalofruralvitalization.Eachyear,around20billionlightersaresoldaroundtheworldand75percentofthemaremadeinShaodong,Hunanprovince.Thelightersaresoldto120countriesandregions.Iftheywereconnectedend-to-end,thechaincouldencircletheEarthmorethan30times,oneindustryexpertsaid.Overtheyears,thelightercompaniesinShaodonghavegrownbiggerandmoreautomated,withtheirproductsandtheindustryupgradingconstantly.However,whathasremainedunchangedfor20yearsisthepriceofthedisposablelighters.Theyarealmostalwayssoldat1yuan($0.14)eachbyretailstores,meaningthemanufacturerscanstillmakeaprofitdespiteinflationandrisingcosts.Shaodongisahillyregionwithonlyaround10percentofflatland.Thelackofarablelandpromptedlocalpeopletofindotherwaystomakealiving.Afterthereformandopening-uppolicywasintroducedin1978,Shaodongpeopleventuredintotradingbusinesses,sellingdifferenttypesofsmallmerchandisetocustomersaroundthecountry.WorkerssortlightersforexportatafactoryinShuangfeng,acountynearShaodonginHunanprovince.NAIJIHUI/FORCHINADAILYIn2022,Shaodongwasranked92amongmorethan2,844county-levelregionsinthecountryintermsofmanufacturingprowess.LightersarethepillarindustryofShaodong,employingmorethan80,000people,roughly7.6percentofthetotallocalpopulation.BaiJiabao,deputygeneralmanagerofHunanDongyiElectricShareCo,thelargestlightermanufacturerinShaodong,saidthecompanystartedmakinglightersin1994.Today,itcanproduce12to13millionlightersperdayofmorethan200types.Thelightersaresoldforpricesrangingfrom0.3yuanto30yuaneach.Morethan80percentofitslightersareexportedoverseastoover100countriesandregions,hesaid.Althoughtheprofitmadefromeachlighterislow,thecompanycanstillmakemoneyandstaycompetitivethroughinvestinginautomationandupgradingthesupplychain,hesaid.Whileitscheapestlightersaresoldfor0.3yuaneach,Baisaidthecompanycanmakeabout10percentprofitthankstotheuseofautomation.Thecompanystartedtoinvestinautomationin2013andhasspentaround60to70millionyuaninresearchanddevelopmentinthesector.TheuseofautomationhashelpedHunanDongyiElectricShareincreaseitsproductioncapacity20-fold,Baisaid.Whileitusedtoemploymorethan4,000peopletomakearound1millionlightersaday,itnowcanproducemorethan10millionwithhalfthenumberofemployees,hesaid.Asacheapandconvenientsourceforfire,lighterscannotbereplacedbyanyothertoolsandIamproudtoworkinthisindustry,Baisaid.LightersaremadeatafactoryinShaodong,Hunan.XINHUALightingthesparkLighterswerefirstmanufacturedinZhejiangandGuangdongprovincesinthe1980s,withZhejiangsWenzhouamajorproductionhub.However,inthelate1990sandearly2000s,theproductionlinewastransferredtocentralregionsduetotherisingcostoflaborincoastalareas,andShaodongseizedtheopportunitytobecomealeadingproductionbase.FuZaihuaandherhusbandYaoHanyunwereamongthefirstpeopleinShaodongtoworkintheindustry.In1992,afriendtoldthemthatlightermanufacturingwasabigbusinessandthecouplewenttoafactoryinGuangdongprovincetotryandlearnthetechniques.However,theywereonlygivenalimitedtimeduringthevisittoobservethemanufacturingprocess,anddidnotlearnmuch.Webought50lightersandstartedtodismantleandreassemblethemrepeatedly,tryingtolearntheskillsbyourselves,Fusaid.Later,theybought100,000lighterpartsandbegantheirownbusinessventureathome.Theircompany,ShunfaManufacturingCorp,wasalsothefirstoneinShaodongtoselllighterstoanoverseasclientwhowasfromIndonesia.Whilecheapdisposablelightersarestilloneofthecompanysbestsellingitems,ithasputgreateffortandinnovationintoproducingmorehigh-endproductsanddiversifyingitsbusinessportfolio.Automationhasalsogreatlyimprovedefficiency,sothatmorelighterscanbeproducedwithfeweremployees.Eventhoughworkerssalarieshaveincreased,costscanremainlow,sothecompanysproductsarestillcompetitive.Fusaidtheyhavebeenthroughmuchhardshipintheexpansionandrunningofthebusiness.Thereweredifficultiesinalmosteverysector,fromgettingfundstofindingtherightstaffandobtainingtechnology,shesaid.However,theyweredetermined,andpersevered.ImadeadecisionbackthenthatIintendedtofollowthrough,shesaid.Shaodongpeopleareknowntobehardworkingandtenacious,thatsthesecretofoursuccess.OtherlocalswerequicktofollowtheirleadandnumeroussmalllightermanufacturingfactoriesopenedinShaodong.Topreventhostilecompetitionandboostcooperation,in2002,theShaodongLighterIndustryAssociationwasestablished.OuyangZhen,vicemayorofShaodong,saidtheassociationpublishespriceguidesforlightersandconsolidatesresourcesfortheindustrytoavoidpricewarsamongdifferententerprises,andtomaintainsoundmarketdevelopment.Theassociationalsohasadatabaseonnewproducts.Whenanenterprisemakesanewproduct,itneedstoprovidesamplestotheassociationforitsrecords.Ifthenewproductissimilartoanexistingoneitwillbesentbacktotheenterprise,hesaid.Thereare114lightercompaniesinthecounty.Twenty-sevenarelightermanufacturerswhiletheremainderproducematerialsforlighterproduction.Ouyangsaidthecompaniescan
